The theme for September - October 2010:

A continuation of this popular theme.

IN THE GARDEN

Nature pleases, attracts, delights, merely because it is nature.
We recognize in it an Infinite Power.
(Karl Wilhelm von Humboldt, philosopher, 1767–1835)

A few minutes ago every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling, tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease. Every hidden cell is throbbing with music and life, every fiber thrilling like harp strings, while incense is ever flowing from the balsam bells and leaves. No wonder the hills and groves were God’s first temples, and the more they are cut down and hewn into cathedrals and churches, the farther off and dimmer seems the Lord himself.
(John Muir, naturalist and author, 1838–1914)

In the garden the door is always open into the “holy” — growth, birth, death. Every flower holds the whole mystery in its short cycle, and in the garden we are never far away from death, the fertilizing, good creative death. . . . Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is an instrument of grace.
(May Sarton, poet and author, 1912–1995)

Deadline for the
September - October issue is August 10.

BRANCHES does not offer compensation for published work. Please inculde your phone number and/or e-mail address with your biographical information if you want readers to contact you.

BRANCHES does not publish reviews. BRANCHES is a forum for discussion of personal growth, health care, the environment, peace and justice, spirituality and the arts.

BRANCHES does not publish advertorials. An advertorial is a marketing pitch for a person, product, or service that is written to look like an objective, independent news feature. The word advertorial comes from advertisement + editorial. In other words, an advertorial is a paid advertisement made to look like other editorial content. People who purchase advertorial space will either supply the content themselves or have final approval on what is created for them, just as with other paid advertisements. Some publications sell advertorial space openly, while others make trades: if you'll buy an ad, they'll give you an equal amount of space for your marketing copy-your advertorial. Sometimes the advertorial is labeled "Paid Advertisement" but more often its true nature is hidden from the reader.

We practice traditional journalistic ethics here. We keep our editorial content separate from the advertisements so that you can be sure of the integrity of what you're reading. No quid pro quo arrangements are offered: no one ever receives editorial space in exchange for buying an ad.

We are grateful to our talented writers and also to all our advertisers, without whom there would be no BRANCHES magazine, now in its 23rd year of continuous publication. Thank you!
