Coming in
September - October 2008:
IMAGINATION
In
support of this year’s Spirit & Place Festival theme, we’ll
explore imagination: Where does it reside? Who or what cultivates it? When are
boundaries appropriate? What is needed to unleash public imagination in ways
that benefit our communities’ economic, social and cultural health? (Spirit & Place
will be held Nov. 1–14, in Indianapolis.)
Everything
you can imagine is real.
(Pablo Picasso, Spanish painter and sculptor)
Sometimes
questions are more important than answers.
(Nancy Willard, American poet and writer)
Without
this playing with fantasy no creative work has ever yet come to birth. The debt
we own to the play of the imagination is incalculable.
(Carl G. Jung, Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist)
Deadline
for the
September
- October
issue
is August
10.

Summer
Skies
Here in the Midwest, the summer heat begins to reach the point where you almost
look forward to autumn as temps remain in the 90s and the humidity makes it feel
like you’re wrapped in a hot, wet blanket. Even so, the evenings have been
relatively pleasant, enough to coax people out from their dark, air-conditioned
lairs to look at the sky.
Casting our glance upward, the skies continue to display their ceaseless
planetary dance. Mars and Saturn begin to separate from each other as together
they descend closer to the horizon with each passing night. Venus is just now
peeking out from the solar glare, low on the western horizon at sunset, while
mighty Jupiter blazes in the southern skies, having reached maximum brilliance.
Over the past two nights, Jupiter has made its way across the night sky in close
company with the nearly full Moon — an auspicious sign if there ever was one.
Capricorn-Cancer Full
Moon
In the wee hours of Friday morning, the Capricorn Moon reaches its Full Phase as
it moves directly opposite the Cancer Sun, marking the high-water mark for items
that came into being two weeks ago at the Cancer New Moon. This is the midpoint
of the solar-lunar cycle and an extremely fertile time, not only for plants, but
also for projects and other initiatives that can benefit from the Moon’s peak
energy. Now is a good time to put your shoulder to the wheel.
From a psychological standpoint, becoming more aware of our priorities is
highlighted, particularly where our life journey is taking us. Authenticity is a
key theme, as the Capricorn Full Moon challenges our denials and forces us to
look at the world for what it is without the aid of rose-colored glasses. This
is also a time given to find ways to balance our career aspirations (Capricorn)
with our need for domestic tranquility and close family interactions (Cancer).
Oftentimes, this awareness comes about through the polarizing symbolism of the
two opposing signs of Capricorn and Cancer, where we might feel ourselves torn
between two extremes. Of course, this polarity is largely an illusion, as a
harmonious family life is intricately tied to our job performance and vice
versa. Nevertheless, this weekend, take the time to reassess your needs as well
as your goals to find the sweet spot that resides in the ever-present Now.
Just Ahead
As a whole, the coming week appears relatively calm as far as major
planet-to-planet alignments are concerned. Next week begins to show signs of an
energy buildup that appears to peak at the Leo New Moon/Total Solar Eclipse on
Aug. 1. The week before and after this eclipse points toward greater levels of
intensity, with the eclipse itself landing on some extremely sensitive locations
found in the charts of countries, leaders and institutions. But that’s another
story. Enjoy your week!
Lunar Gardening Report
Even with the waning Moon decreasing in light this coming week, there are still
some good days left to plant and fertilize. The Capricorn Full Moon lends its
potent earth energy through most of Saturday morning with freshly picked produce
brimming with an abundance of life-force energy. The Moon then enters
agriculturally barren Aquarius Saturday at 11:40 a.m. through most of Sunday,
making this a poor weekend for planting, transplanting and other gardening work
aside from weed and pest control. Sunday evening at 7:45 p.m. through Tuesday we
get one final blast of fertile lunar energy from the Pisces Moon — the last
best opportunity to plant until Aug. 5. This is also an excellent time to apply
liquid fertilizer to plants already in the ground. The Aries Moon takes the
stage Wednesday and Thursday, pointing to weed and pest control as well as
cutting to slow growth, but not a good time to plant or fertilize.
Daily Forecast (For
all signs)
(Times are Eastern Daylight/-0400 UTC)
Friday, July 18: The Cancer-Capricorn
Full Moon takes place at 3:59 a.m. (26Cap04), underscoring the difference
between domestic security and the outer world. There is likely to be strong
desire to maintain the status quo at this time while resisting necessary
changes, even if the changes appear more desirable in the long run. This is an
ideal time for projects that have been in the works these past two weeks as
productivity values are extremely high at this time. With the Full Moon setting
off a void-of-course (VOC) period lasting until 11:40 a.m., it would be best to
hold off from making any new decisions or initiatives during the morning hours.
The Moon enters the clear skies of Aquarius at 11:40 a.m., coinciding with an
emotionally detached perspective that can yield important insights.
Saturday, July 19: This could be a rather
busy day with errands, communications and connections reaching a fevered pitch
(Mercury opposed Jupiter). Conversations could center on subject matter ranging
from finance to religion with strongly held opinions leading to a potential
standoff. Agree to disagree while remembering that knowing about something
isn’t the same as understanding it. This is a good night for a party.
Sunday, July 20: The Moon continues its
journey through Aquarius, highlighting social interactions and group projects
that allow for individual expression. Mental fog is possible first thing this
morning, but should lift by noon after you’re done with the Sunday paper and a
pot of coffee. An afternoon movie matinee is favored, as is kicking back and
enjoying the day. After a brief VOC period tonight, the Moon enters Pisces,
leading us into the realm of dreams.
Monday, July 21: Thinking may be a bit
scattered this morning as we rub sleep from our eyes under the Pisces Moon.
Questions involving a balance of power could come to our attention early this
morning, making this a good day to avoid unnecessary conflicts with people in
positions of authority (Sun quincunx Pluto). Conversations could yield important
insights this morning, along with the feeling of things not moving fast enough;
try not to push too hard, as this is only a temporary state. A second wind is
indicated around sunset that could manifest as irritation, impatience or a minor
conflict with others if the energy has no constructive outlet. Use the extra
energy to tackle a small project instead.
Tuesday, July 22: The Sun enters Leo
first thing this morning, pointing to a month of upbeat and gracious attitudes
as well as greater levels of creativity and playfulness. Happy Birthday, Leos .
. . this month it’s all about YOU! The Pisces Moon gets involved in a
favorable alignment between Mercury and Uranus, suggesting pleasant surprises,
favorable travel and surprising news. Technological breakthroughs and scientific
discoveries are common expressions of Mercury-Uranus. Make the most of this
alignment by maintaining an open and flexible mindset, as just about anything
can happen.
Wednesday, July 23: Under the Aries Moon,
activity levels appear rather high, signaling a full-speed-ahead approach to
mundane affairs. There could be some minor confusion to deal with this morning,
but shouldn’t be a cause for concern if you keep your mind focused. The
remainder of the day is free of alignments, providing the necessary environment
for getting stuff done. With the waning Moon entering its Last Quarter Phase on
Friday, today and tomorrow are the last good days for getting it in the oven
before the current solar-lunar cycle begins to close.
Thursday, July 24: Aside from the
potential for overdoing things this morning, the rest of the day appears free of
obstacles under the Aries Moon. Positive, upbeat attitudes are highlighted,
along with a fairly strong drive. A mild lunar alignment favors movies, music
and deep states of relaxation later tonight.
