The theme for September - October 2010: A
continuation of this popular theme. Nature
pleases, attracts, delights, merely because it is nature. A few minutes ago
every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling,
tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though
to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease.
Every hidden cell is throbbing with music and life, every fiber thrilling
like harp strings, while incense is ever flowing from the balsam bells
and leaves. No wonder the hills and groves were God’s first temples, and
the more they are cut down and hewn into cathedrals and churches, the
farther off and dimmer seems the Lord himself. In the garden the
door is always open into the “holy” — growth, birth, death. Every flower
holds the whole mystery in its short cycle, and in the garden we are never
far away from death, the fertilizing, good creative death. . . . Everything
that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into
the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is an instrument of grace. Deadline

HOW
TO SUBMIT AN ARTICLE OR ARTWORK to
top of page BRANCHES invites submission of articles, poetry, artwork and photographs. Here are the guidelines: 1.
Please read the issue theme information in the left-hand column on this
page. Submissions must be related to this theme in some way. 2.
Submissions must be created by Hoosiers or former Hoosiers OR be
about people or events in the state of Indiana. 3.
Articles should be at least 600 and not more than 1200 words. 4.
Please submit your work electronically
via e-mail. Submissions sent by regular mail will not be returned
unless accompanied by a self-addressed envelope with adequate postage.
Handwritten or typewritten submissions are seldom used. 5.
Artwork should be submitted electronically in small size at low resolution
for initial consideration. Artwork accepted for publication must be available
at high resolution and publishable size (at least 3 x 5 and 300 dpi; larger
for the cover). 6. Please include your full name, address and telephone number with your submission even if you do not want them published. Please also include a short (one or two sentences) biography for publication that includes the city or county where you live. You may include contact information if you wish. Please

does not offer compensation for published work.
We will add your contact information to your article or artwork if you
