The theme for January - February 2009:
CHANGE
The
dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is
piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is
new, so we must think anew and act anew.
(Abraham Lincoln, 1809-65, 16th president)
It
takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace
the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is
more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life,
and in change there is power.
(Alan Cohen, 1950–, author)
Although
the connections are not always obvious, personal change is inseparable from
social and political change.
(Harriet Lerner, 1944–, psychologist and author)
Education
either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the
younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about
conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and
women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to
participate in the transformation of their world.
(Paulo Freire, 1921–97, educator and philosopher)
We
frail humans are at one time capable of the greatest good and, at the same time,
capable of the greatest evil. Change will only come about when each of us takes
up the daily struggle ourselves to be more forgiving, compassionate, loving, and
above all joyful in the knowledge that, by some miracle of grace, we can change
as those around us can change too.
(Mairead Maguire, 1944–, Nobel Peace Prize–winner)
Deadline
for the
January
- February issue is Dec. 3.

ABOUT
the COVER
Light
the Path
watercolor
18 x 12 inches
by
Adele Schluge
A
father walks with his young son from the darkness, through the historic
arch at IPS #15, onto a path illuminated by lanterns held by people of
Indianapolis. They represent us all: a community volunteer, businessman,
mother, coach, retired citizen, social worker, leader of a faith
community, school bus driver, teacher. Every adult has a gift to share
in the life of a child.
A
16-by-20-inch limited edition poster from the original watercolor is
being sold to benefit the students of the Indianapolis Public Schools.
One hundred percent of every sale goes directly to the IPS school of the
buyer’s choice. Donations are being used by schools in many ways: to
start a science club; provide incentives and treats for good behavior
and academic success; equip a grade school basketball team; create
reading/listening stations; fund field trip fees or service learning
projects; and many others. More than $12,000 has already been
distributed.
Each
poster is $20. Please make your check payable to the IPS school of your
choice or to the IPS Education Foundation. To purchase a poster, call
317/352-1090 or e-mail irvhouse@aol.com,
or stop by the Antique Mall of Irvington, 5501 E. Washington St., Indpls.
Thank you!
